Europe Code Week has arrived at Hunyadi János Elementary School. The first and second graders are really enjoying Ruby’s adventures. But who is Ruby? She is a little girl with great imagination and full of questions. Hello Ruby: Adventures in Coding by Linda Liukas offers children an interesting way to learn about computers, technology and programming. It is half picture book and half activity book full of exciting coding tasks, ideal for young learners, especially girls. It introduces programming without requiring a computer at all. The point of the book isn’t to teach kids a programming language but introduces the fundamentals of computational thinking that every future kid coder will need.

Students learnt the names of the characters in English and wrote their names in penguin language. It was fun!

The most exciting part was when they worked with Bee-bot. Before the activity, we practised giving instructions in English (move forward two steps, turn left, turn right, move backwards).

Our adventures with Ruby won’t finish with the end of European Code Week and partner schools from Greece and Iceland will also join us on eTwinning.

We are really grateful to SAP, Haus des Stiftens gGmbH and TechSoup Balkans for supporting our work with the Meet and Code grant.
